Falkland Islands Maps & Facts
Almost everyone will visit this archipelago during the summer, so this complete Falkland packing list I wrote covers everything you need to bring for travel in that season. And on that note, we’ll segue perfectly into what to pack for the Falkland islands! Blue skies days are common, but the wind picks up something crazy, so you’ll still want to bring plenty of warm clothing layers! In the winter (from May to Sept) the islands are cold and wet and grey. In relative terms, the islands are not that far from the Antarctic Peninsula! This is because, with limited accommodation on most of the outer islands, things are both expensive and get booked up early.
The Falkland Islands are a small most p group of islands some 300 miles east of Argentina, with a population of around 3,600. The port settlement of Stanley has regained the islands’ economic focus, with an increase in population as workers migrate from Camp. The islands’ major exports include wool, hides, venison, fish and squid; its main imports include fuel, building materials and clothing.
- Located on the island of East Falkland is Stanley (also, Port Stanley) is the capital of Falkland Islands.
- In 1942, a battalion en route to India was redeployed to the Falklands as a garrison amid fears of a Japanese seizure of the archipelago.
- Eventually, the British expelled Argentina from the islands in 1833 and established the Falklands as an official colony.
#11 Mount Pleasant Airport
When they refused British orders to leave, Argentina sent warships ostensibly to protect the workers. The archipelago, which lies 8,000 miles away from the British Isles, was settled by the British in the mid-18th century. The competing claims to the island date back hundreds of years, to a period when the British Empire stretched across the world. Struggling to pay for gas and energy bills ever since the war sparked a worldwide energy crisis, raising prices across the world.
#6 What to Pack & Travel Insurance
Since the 2013 general election, members of the Legislative Assembly have received a salary and are expected to work full-time and give up all previously held jobs or business interests. Argentina and the UK re-established diplomatic relations in 1990, but neither has agreed on the terms of future sovereignty discussions. The war also left some 117 minefields containing nearly 20,000 mines of various types, including anti-vehicle and anti-personnel mines. After the war the UK expanded its military presence, building RAF Mount Pleasant and increasing the size of its garrison. Nonetheless, Falklander dissent, as expressed by their strong lobby in the UK Parliament, and tensions between the UK and Argentina effectively limited sovereignty negotiations until 1977.
These companies are based in Stanley, so you’ll have to travel there to collect the vehicle and compete the paperwork. There are also biosecurity points on each of the smaller islands when you fly to them. You’ll also need to pay a departure tax when leaving the islands too. In particular, you’ll see a heavy police presence here, you’ll also have to queue for a long time, as baggage facilities are pretty limited. If you’re arriving by plane to the Falklands, you’ll land at the International Airport, which is located in Mount Pleasant.
